The Municipal Authority has invested a great deal of money and effort to the
young people, since they represent an important asset for the city. New
schools, new housed gyms and sport grounds, and many activities throughout
the year aim to encourage young people to contribute creatively to society.
This policy has already shown results and teams of young people stand out in
different sectors at the international level.
• In 2008 the students of the 1st Gymnasium of Byron won in Aachen
Germany the Charlemagne Prize. This is a contest conducted by the European
Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of
Aachen. The competition is open to young people from all Member States of
the European Union and it concerns the development of the European Union,
European integration and identity.
• The basketball team of the Athletic high school of Byron won the world
championship of school teams, that was held in 2008, in Po France.
• Many clubs of the city have stand out in Greek and European athletic
venues.
As far as sports is concerned:
• Throughout the year we offer sport programs for young people.
• Every year and for one month we organize “Pamvyroneia” sports events,
involving more than 3000 young people under the age of 18th.
• A dedicated sports school for students involved in sports exists in our city.
As far as Culture is concerned, through the city’s Cultural Centre:
• we organize annually a festival for young people below 18 years actively
involving 6000 young people.
• we organize the “Little scene”, including a series of theatrical performances,
screenings of films and puppet performances for children.
• we provide lessons on painting, dance, drama, music, photography and
cottage industries.
Alongside, the “Isadora & Raymond Duncan Dance Research Centre” is an
internationally prestigious cultural centre for dance, in the programs of which
participate each year hundreds of young people.
Since 2006 the Support Youth Program is being applied, where qualified staff
is standing next to the problems of our youth. Among others, the issues of
professional orientation and confrontation of the school’s examination periods
are raised.
