Dutch insurer Eureko said on Friday its chief executive Maarten Dijkshoorn had resigned, effective Jan. 1 and that a decision on his replacement will be made as soon as possible.
Eureko, which is the Netherlands’ largest insurer with 4.7 million health insurance clients, and is partly owned by unlisted Dutch financial group Rabobank, said Dijkshoorn, 58, resigned for personal reasons.
‘Eureko regrets this, but respects his decision,’ the company said in a statement.
A spokesman said although a replacement candidate has not yet been identified, the company hopes to find a new CEO very quickly. It is searching both externally and internally.
Until the supervisory board finds a replacement, Dijkshoorn’s duties will be temporarily taken up by vice-presidents Willem van Duin and Gerard van Olphen.
Dijkshoorn is the second board member to have left Eureko in the past six months, following the departure of Chief Financial Officer Roel Wijmenga, who resigned for personal reasons on July 1, 2008.
As CEO, Dijkshoorn led the company’s merger with insurer Interpolis in 2005 and health insurer Agis in 2007, while the group also expanded internationally in Turkey and most recently in Russia under his leadership.
The company spokesman said Eureko will continue to seek acquisitions, especially in Eastern Europe, and that the change in management will not hinder that strategy.
